Taking place throughout May and June 2024, this inaugural season is a landmark celebration of Vietnamese cinema, its legacy, its vision, and its power to connect audiences across cultures.

From pioneering classics to urgent contemporary stories, this programme showcases the richness of Vietnam’s cinematic voice, told by Vietnamese storytellers through a Vietnamese cultural lens.

Screenings and events took place across the UK, with headline events at Rich Mix (London), FACT Cinema in the City at PAGODA ARTS  (Liverpool), and Midlands Arts Centre (Birmingham), as well as one off screenings in Bradford, Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle, Nottingham Leicester,  Leeds and Sheffield.

Our Vision

“This is about seeing ourselves on screen. About building bridges. About celebrating stories that have long gone unseen.”

tuyết vân huỳnh, festival director

Vietnamese cinema has been shaped by resistance, resilience, and imagination. From its earliest beginnings in the 1920s, through colonial rule, war, and reconstruction, Vietnamese filmmakers have carved out a distinctive voice. Yet in the UK, this legacy remains largely invisible. As we approach the centenary of Vietnamese cinema, Star Nhà Ease seeks to reframe this narrative. Our goal is to spark curiosity, kindle new audiences, and invite the UK public to experience Vietnamese stories on their own terms, rich with joy, sorrow, humour, poetry, and complexity.
